Languages Learning Tips

Initial understanding and comprehension of a language is often followed by period of frustration as you reach the next plateau in your learning. So that discouragement does not set in before you master the pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary to attain the ability to understand and communicate effectively you need some language learning tips.

The following time-tested methods for language study should help you overcome the early frustration and increase your chances of succeeding in learning your language of choice.

1. Practise to yourself regularly. The best way to get better at a language is to speak it as much as possible, so if there is no one around, talk to yourself.

2. Listen to music. Put on music in your new language and you’ll hear that language used in a real context and better appreciate the culture behind the language.

3. Penpals and forums. Find a penpal and write letters (snail-mail) or get on the Internet, find correspondents and write e-mails. Many language learning sites feature blogs, and this is an excellent way for instantaneous communication.

4. Join a language club. Try to find a language club and you’ll receive lots of useful language learning tips and helpful advice.

5. Watch television. Watch as much tv in your new language as possible. If there are English subtitles, when you get proficient, try covering them up.

6. Listen to audiobooks. Listening to audiobooks in your language helps you pick up the rhythm of the language. This is a great thing to do whilst driving, or housecleaning.

7. Use flash cards. Make these yourself and put them around the house on all common objects and you’ll be amazed at how quickly your vocabulary will grow.

8. Form study groups. Work together with other language students on homework assignments, vocabulary learning, study for tests, and to practice speaking the language.
