Why Learn a language
It’s easy to think that because “everyone speaks English” that we don’t need to lean other languages. When you travel you’ll find that while English is certainly becoming the world’s favourite language, it is not spoken everywhere at all. In fact, only around 6% of the world's population speaks English as their main language. And if you are planning a trip to non-English speaking countries you’ll find more enjoyment, learn more, and generally understand the culture better if you have a basic understanding of the language of the country you are visiting. And while you may not have to get by entirely in the language, you’ll find people only too eager to help you as they practice their English. The deal could be: I’ll practise my foreign language while you practice your English.
If you are monolingual you will inhibit your educational development and restrict your communication and thinking abilities. Learning languages presents new opportunities for work, travel and friendships and general personal, professional and social development.
Here are some good reasons why you should consider learning a foreign language:
- Improved employment opportunities as goods and services become ever more globalized. Bilingual or multilingual employees have a far better change of a foreign posting.
- Develop a better understanding of the world, its people, its economy and its varied cultures by understanding the linguistic dynamics of differing countries.
- Since most of the world's cultural output has been written in languages other than English, you’ll better appreciate literature, film, theater, and music in their original language.
- With international travel opportunities for work and recreation become more and more available you’ll learn more and be better received when you come with some knowledge of the language.
- International study options are greatly enhanced by fluency in the language of the educational host country.
